If you are looking for a special tract of land with a stream, pasture for a horse or small livestock, garden space, multiple building site options, privacy, and best of all - incredible panoramic layered views, then... Geography
Cherry Tree Hill is a subsummit of Helton Knob (elev. 3,558 ft), rising from a ridge on the south side of Helton Knob. Big Helton Creek cuts a valley on the west side of Cherry Tree Hill, while Piney Branch cuts the valley on the east side. To the south of Cherry Tree Hill, the ridge delines to a point where Piney Branch empties into Big Helton Creek, which in turn, empties into the North Fork New River shortly thereafter.
The top of Cherry Tree Hill is a nearly level grassy one acre resting at 3,000 feet in elevation. The lower knoll of Cherry Tree Hill (elev. 2,850 ft) is also grassy and boasts a level 1.5 acres on top. Lying on the hillside below the lower knoll is a lovely one-acre boundary of white pine trees. The lower section (elev. 2,700 ft) features an acre of fenced, cleared land refreshingly fed by Piney Branch and suitable for gardening, crops or grazing.
Location and Access
Cherry Tree Hill is located in the Grassy Creek township of Ashe County, NC. The 10-acre tract includes 100 feet of state road frontage at the end of Mont Shepherd Road, a well-maintained gravel road off Old Hwy 16 between Crumpler and Grassy Creek. Access to the top of Cherry Tree Hill is currently by a combination of open field and farm road traversing a half mile up and around the hill to the top. A four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended.
History
Since Meredith Ballou purchased Cherry Tree Hill in 1813 as part of a larger tract, it has been passed down through five generations of the Ballou and Shepherd families.
